How Can I Support My Neurodivergent Child? 15 Tips That Helped Our Family

If Your Child Was Just Diagnosed Neurodivergent, Let Me Give You a Hug.

I remember sitting exactly where you may be today. Overwhelmed. Scared. Wondering if I was doing enough.

As the mom of three incredible children with autism, I spent years searching for ways to help my kids thrive. I wasn’t looking for a miracle. I was looking for practical ideas that could make everyday life just a little easier.

    Neurodivergent Child

I typed questions into Google like:

    • “How can I help my autistic child naturally?”
    • “What reduces meltdowns?”
    • “How can I get my kids to eat more?”
    • “What helps neurodivergent children sleep better?”
    • “How can I create a calmer home?”
    • “What do “safe” places look like with kids with autism/neurodivergence?”

If that’s why you’re here today, I hope this article gives you both practical ideas and hope. One of my sons had a very low IQ. Doctor’s were not sure he could learn. Today, he is a college graduate, working a full time computer science job. There is hope. Don’t give up! Keep looking for resources, different learning techniques for the Neurodivergent population.

    What We Know About Autism/Neurodivergent

Today, researchers agree that autism has a strong genetic component. Scientists also continue to study how environmental factors may interact with genetics during early development. Autism is complex, and there isn’t one single cause or one single solution.

That realization actually brought me peace. I can’t change my children’s genetics. But I can create a home that supports their health, learning, and emotional well-being. That’s exactly what our family set out to do.

Neurodivergent Kids - 15 Ways to help

    One Thing Changed Everything

One of the biggest lessons I learned is this:

There wasn’t one magic therapy. And there wasn’t one miracle supplement. The answer wasn’t one essential oil. It was hundreds of small decisions made consistently over many years. This includes Speech therapy, Occupational therapy, ABA, and Behavior plans. We layered in Movement, Better sleep (process of elimination), Nutrition (we try hard – thank God for supplements), and Medication when appropriate.

What helped the most was Love. Along with Patience. And creating a home that felt calm and predictable. Every little piece mattered.

But hear me, this came with many tears, a divorce, and a crap ton of debt. Our solutions weren’t without pain, searching, and a great deal of grief and heartache.

Would I change my kids? I don’t think so. I wanted my neurodivergent children to be all that they could be. My goals included them being able to navigate an airport alone. It’s yet to be determined if they are all able to do this. 🙏🏼

15 Practical Ways We Supported Our Neurodivergent Kids

    1. Create Predictable Routines

    Neurodivergent individuals thrive in routines.

Children often feel more secure when they know what comes next.

    Morning routines.

    Homework routines.

    Bedtime routines.

Consistency helped reduce stress for everyone. Change is hard. So we aimed to keep our routines predictable as much as possible.

    2. Prioritize Sleep

Good sleep made a tremendous difference in our home. We kept bedtime consistent, dimmed the lights, reduced screens before bed, and created a peaceful environment whenever possible. Although, full disclosure, one of my neurodivergent kiddos has to have something going on in the background to sleep, possibly YouTube videos.

    3. Get Outside Every Day

Let’s face it. This was a goal. It did NOT happen every day. Fresh air and movement helped my kids regulate their emotions. Even fifteen minutes outside often made homework go much more smoothly. Most neurodivergent individuals thrive in the outdoors and nature.

    4. Break Difficult Tasks Into Small Pieces

Instead of expecting an hour of homework, we often worked for five to ten minutes, followed by a short movement break. Those breaks made a huge difference. Think token boards, crossing off expectations, showing an end in sight with visual timers.

    5. Reduce Background Noise

    Television. Music. Extra conversations.

For one of my sons, too much background noise made it much harder to concentrate. Creating a quiet space helped him focus.

For some neurodivergents, quiet atmospheres are very helpful. My one child is easily overwhelmed by any extra noise.

    6. Celebrate Small Wins

    Progress deserved celebration.

One completed math row? Celebrate. (High fives, a Pokemon card from the prize box, a m&m candy)…

A successful bedtime? Celebrate, with a cartoon on at breakfast.

Trying something new? Celebrate. (Go for a special outing, play ten minutes later at bedtime, give deep compressions with pillows, pull the kids around on a blanket, play baby dinosaur)…

Those little victories build confidence over time, which help my neurodivergent kids build self esteem. They could see they were capable of hard things.

    7. Use Positive Reinforcement

Reward charts, favorite activities, and immediate encouragement were much more effective for our family than punishment. Get creative. One of my kids was obsessed with car washes. I found a see through car wash. We went so often. My son soaked in every second of feeling the brushes move against the glass. Lean into their special interests. They will love you for it.

    8. Focus on Good Nutrition

Our goal wasn’t perfection. It was simply feeding our family nourishing foods as often as we could. Full disclosure: I gave up on veggies. We focused on fruits.

Protein: very rarely was it more than fried chicken products (boneless).

Healthy fats? My kids wouldn’t touch peanut butter. We did all that we could.

Colorful fruits and vegetables (as if)… I tried.

Water. I made my kids drink water. I won that battle.

    Little improvements added up.

    9. Build a Support Team

    We didn’t do this alone.

    Teachers.

    Therapists.

    Doctors.

    Friends.

    Church.

    Family.

Accepting help made us stronger. Neurodivergents typically take a village. I used to think maybe we needed a whole tribe/city to raise our kids well.

    10. Find the Right Therapies

Speech therapy, occupational therapy, and ABA were all important parts of our journey.

Every child is different, so work with professionals to determine what best fits your child’s needs. One child needed vision therapy, and physical therapy, the others didn’t. Pick and choose what works best. Throw out what is stress inducing, or what causes more chaos.

    11. Remember Yourself

Caregivers need care too. You cannot pour from an empty cup. Think micro self care. Read this post about self care HERE.

    Caregivers of Nerodivergent Individuals

    12. Keep Learning

    Every child is wonderfully unique.

    Stay curious.

    Ask questions.

    Read.

    Learn.

Adjust. Model coping skills for your neurodivergent kids, teaching them to keep learning too. Learning is addictive!

    13. Create a Calm Environment

    Simple things helped our family:

    • Soft lighting
    • Organized spaces with labels, (pictures)
    • Predictable routines
    • Calm voices
    • Sensory-friendly spaces
    • Quiet spots

    14. Give Yourself Grace

    There is no perfect parent.

You don’t have to do everything.

    Do the next right thing.

    Then tomorrow…

Do it again. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.

Neurodivergence takes patience and breaks as much as possible.

    15. Products Our Family Enjoyed Using

Over the years, we also chose to include wellness products as part of our family’s routines.

These weren’t cures. They were simply products we personally enjoyed using alongside everything else we were already doing.

    Some of our favorites included:

    KidScents® Geneyus

We enjoyed using Geneyus as part of our family’s overall wellness routine. This is also part of the Reconnect Kit. I like giving my kids the rollerball, so whenever they feel stumped, I remind them to apply it.

    Unwind™

Evenings after therapy, appointments, and homework could feel overwhelming. We enjoyed incorporating Unwind into our bedtime routine as part of creating a peaceful environment.

    MightyPro®

Supporting gut health became one of the many healthy habits we focused on. Our guts determine our brain function at a deep level. Many of our kids need gut health support. This is a probiotic made for children! I still take them occasionally myself.

These sweet, yummy pixie sticks were a reward my kids looked forward to at night. They truly thought I was letting them have candy before bed – ha!

    Reconnect Kit

This kit supports all of the most emphasized traits of the neurodivergent. It’s pricey. I would buy it once, see which oils positively affect your kids the most. Then, I would buy those products individually. That’s how I roll.

    Reconnect Kit for children

I honestly wanted my kids to drink Ningxia Red. However, not one of them would tolerate it, Friends of mine have had phenomenal results in their children after the kids have ingested Ningxia Red for a few weeks. I wanted to include this as a possibility because it has been so helpful for others.

    Hope for the Journey

If I could sit across the table from every newly diagnosed parent, I’d tell them this:

    Don’t chase perfection.

Don’t believe every promise on the internet.

    And don’t lose hope.

Your child doesn’t need to become someone else.

Your child needs people who will understand, encourage, and help them discover their unique gifts.

My oldest son once cried through homework for hours.

Today, he’s a grown man driving, working, living a full life.

    Growth is possible.

    Progress is possible.

Hope is always possible. Keep going. One step in front of the other. Try new tactics. Adjust. Rinse and repeat.

  • Why Am I So Inflamed? 7 Everyday Habits That May Help Women Over 40 Feel Better

Why Am I So Inflamed? 7 Everyday Habits That May Help Women Over 40 Feel Better

Inflamed? Why are women over 40 so inflamed? Here are 7 Everyday Habits That May Help

Do you ever wake up feeling stiff, puffy, or like your body just doesn’t bounce back the way it used to?

    You’re not alone.

Many women over 40 notice changes in their energy, joints, digestion, and overall well-being. While there are many reasons this can happen, one factor that may play a role is chronic inflammation.

Inflammation isn’t always a bad thing. In fact, it’s one of the ways your body protects and heals itself after an injury or illness. The problem comes when your body is under constant stress from poor sleep, highly processed foods, ongoing stress, or other lifestyle factors. Over time, that constant stress may leave you feeling tired, achy, and discouraged. These all leave the body: inflamed.

The good news? Small daily habits can make a big difference.

    1. Fill Your Plate with More Whole Foods

One of the simplest ways to support your body’s natural healing processes is by eating more whole foods.

    Try adding:

    • Colorful vegetables
    • Fresh fruit
    • Healthy fats like avocado and olive oil
    • Lean proteins
    • High-fiber foods

At the same time, reducing highly processed foods and added sugars may help support your body’s normal inflammatory response, meaning we are less inflamed.

    2. Prioritize Quality Sleep

Your body performs much of its repair work while you sleep.

Aim for a consistent bedtime and create a relaxing nighttime routine by limiting screens, keeping your bedroom cool, and winding down before bed.

After a good night’s sleep with quality rest, I see my face physically looks less inflamed. Sleep is healing!

If you’re interested: download my FREE 5 Minute Wind Down Routine for more quality sleep.

    3. Move Your Body Every Day

You don’t need an intense workout to experience the benefits of movement.

A simple 20-minute walk, gentle stretching, yoga, or strength training can help support healthy joints, circulation, and overall wellness. Inflamed bodies decrease as the body moves more.

    4. Reduce Everyday Stress

Long-term stress affects nearly every system in the body.

Simple habits like prayer, deep breathing, journaling, spending time outside, or enjoying quiet moments can help calm your mind and support your overall health. Inflammation has a tougher time surviving when the body feels supported. We heal when we feel safe, and relaxed.

    5. Drink More Water

Hydration is one of the easiest wellness habits to improve.

Water supports countless functions throughout the body and helps keep everything working as it should, taming inflammation.

    6. Reduce Your Chemical Load

Many everyday cleaning products, air fresheners, candles, and personal care products contain unnecessary fragrances and harsh chemicals.

You don’t have to replace everything overnight. Simply switching one product at a time is a great place to begin creating a healthier home. Inflamed bodies heal better with pure plant based, non hormone disrupting supports.

    7. Give Yourself Grace

Healthy living isn’t about being perfect. It’s about making small, sustainable choices that add up over time. One healthy meal won’t change your life. Neither will one unhealthy meal. Consistency is what matters, with a solid routine of health, inflamed bodies heal.

    Wellness Products I Personally Enjoy

Healthy habits will always be the foundation of feeling your best, but I also enjoy using a few Young Living products as part of my daily wellness routine.

    NingXia Red®

NingXia Red is an antioxidant-rich drink made with wolfberries and other fruit juices. I enjoy starting my morning with it because it’s an easy way to add antioxidant-rich ingredients to my day.

I have drank this every day for years. My body craves this stuff. It is a magnificent drink that has very low sugar, but tastes so refreshing!!

6 Benefits of Drinking Ningxia Red

    Sulfurzyme®

Sulfurzyme contains MSM (methylsulfonylmethane), wolfberry powder, and other ingredients that many people choose to include as part of their wellness routine to support healthy connective tissues and overall wellness.

Guys, this helped me greatly after a divorce. This supplement isn’t just great for inflammation, there is much more as well. Do the research (hint: healthy and hair and nails)!

    Sulferzyme capsules

    Life 9®

A healthy gut plays an important role in overall wellness. Life 9 is a probiotic supplement designed to help support a healthy balance of beneficial bacteria when combined with healthy lifestyle habits.

This is a powerful probiotic and one that almost all my team buys. They all say they feel better taking this.

Please note: These products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. I simply enjoy using them as part of my own wellness routine alongside healthy eating, movement, quality sleep, and stress management.

With these healthy habits and my favorite anti inflamed products, we will be feeling more like ourselves again. We do not have to live so inflamed. There are ways to help.

    The Bottom Line

If you’ve been wondering, “Why do I feel so inflamed?” you’re not imagining things.

The good news is that you don’t have to change everything overnight.

Small choices made consistently often lead to the biggest results.

How to Reduce Stress Naturally When Life Feels Like Too Much

Reduce Stress? Simple Wellness Habits for Overwhelmed Women Over 40

Woman stressed with baby sitting on counter of kitchen

Stress? Do you ever feel like you’re carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders?

Not just physically, but mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. You wake up tired, pushing through the day and still taking care of everyone else. Then you crawl into bed wondering why you feel so exhausted, overwhelmed, and unlike yourself.

If that sounds familiar, friend, you are not alone. This is a WE issue. We all deal with the same things, even putting our pants on the same way – ha! Let’s find how to reduce stress naturally.

Many women over 40 are carrying more responsibility than ever before:

    • raising children
    • caring for aging parents
    • managing careers
    • handling finances
    • supporting family members
    • navigating hormone changes
    • trying to stay healthy
    • balance online friends
    • keeping up with extended family
    • so many plates, in the air, at the same time.

It’s a lot. So much for one person to carry.

The good news is that stress doesn’t have to run the show. While we can’t eliminate every challenge in life, there are simple ways to support the body and mind naturally.

    Let’s talk about them.

What Stress Can Look Like in Women Over 40 (Reducing Stress Naturally)

Stress doesn’t always show up as feeling anxious. Sometimes it looks like:

    • exhaustion
    • brain fog
    • irritability
    • tension headaches
    • neck and shoulder tightness
    • poor sleep
    • sugar cravings
    • low motivation
    • feeling overwhelmed
    • waking up tired

Many women assume something is wrong with them. But often, the body is simply responding to an extended season of pressure.

The body keeps score. Which is why supporting your body matters.

5 Natural Ways to Reduce Stress Naturally

    1. Get Outside Every Day

Fresh air, sunlight, and movement are powerful.

Even a 10-minute walk can help create a break from the constant demands of life. You don’t need a perfect fitness routine, moving is all that is needed.

    Try:

    • walking after dinner
    • sitting on the porch with your coffee
    • taking a quick walk around the block
    • stretching outside

    Small amounts count.

    2. Release Stress Stored in the Body

Many women carry stress in their:

    • neck
    • shoulders
    • jaw
    • upper back

    Sound familiar?

    Try this simple stress reset:

    Doorway Stretch

    • Stand in a doorway.
    • Place your forearms on the door frame.
    • Gently lean forward.
    • Hold for 20–30 seconds.

    Shoulder Rolls

    • Roll shoulders backward 10 times.
    • Take three slow deep breaths.

You’d be amazed how much tension we carry without realizing it. Hopefully, not with arson (😂).

    3. Create a 5-Minute Quiet Routine

You do not need an hour-long morning routine.

You need a few moments of peace.

    Ideas:

    • prayer
    • journaling
    • reading Scripture
    • deep breathing
    • gratitude journaling
    • sitting quietly with a cup of tea

    The goal is simple:

Create a small pocket of calm before the world starts demanding things from you.

    4. Simplify Your Life with Systems

One of the biggest stress reducers I’ve discovered is creating simple systems.

    Things like:

    • meal planning
    • laying out clothes the night before
    • keeping a family calendar
    • creating routines
    • using checklists

Systems reduce decision fatigue. And less decision fatigue means less stress. This is one reason I often say: “You don’t need more hustle. You need better systems.

    5. Support Your Body’s Basic Needs

Sometimes the biggest improvements come from the simplest habits.

    Focus on:

    • drinking enough water
    • eating protein throughout the day
    • getting quality sleep
    • reducing excessive caffeine
    • moving your body regularly

These basics are often overlooked, but they matter tremendously.

Wellness Tools I Personally Enjoy to Reduce stress Naturally

As part of my wellness routine, I also enjoy incorporating plant-based wellness products alongside healthy habits.

These products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease.

    Stress Away

Many people enjoy Stress Away as part of a calming evening routine, during quiet time, or while winding down after a busy day.

    NingXia Red

NingXia Red is an antioxidant-rich beverage that many people enjoy as part of their daily wellness routine.

    NingXia Red Drink

    Sleepyize

Many women prioritize healthy sleep habits as part of stress management and overall wellness support. Sleepyize is one tool some people choose to include in their evening routine.

    Deep Relief Roll-On

After long days spent at a desk or caring for others, many people enjoy Deep Relief as part of a self-care and relaxation routine.

    Final Thoughts

Friend, if life has felt heavy lately, I want you to hear this: we are carrying a lot. It seems like in our 40s-50s, it starts to catch up with us. Ugh.

But, my heart and hope is that we find tools that enable us to thrive in this post. Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is stop trying to push harder and start supporting yourself better.

Stress may be a part of life. But it doesn’t have to define your life. Small daily habits matter. Simple support matters. And so do you. You are a gift, we all are.
