    Energy and Motivation? Say what?!?? Have you ever looked at your to-do list and thought: “I know what I should do… I just don’t have the energy to do it.” You aren’t alone.

    One of the most common struggles I hear from women over 40 is this: “I don’t feel like myself anymore.” They aren’t unmotivated, lacking discipline, and they aren’t lazy either. Typically, women our age are just exhausted. There is a huge difference!

    Many women spend years carrying:

    • careers
    • children
    • aging parents
    • financial responsibilities
    • household management
    • emotional labor
    • hormone changes
    • chronic stress
    • relationships

    Eventually the tank starts running low. The scary part? Many women assume they simply need to try harder. But often the issue isn’t motivation. It’s depletion.


    Motivation and Energy Are Not the Same Thing

    This may surprise you. Most people think motivation comes first. In reality, energy often comes first.

    When you’re:

    • exhausted
    • overwhelmed
    • stressed
    • under-slept
    • emotionally drained

    it’s difficult to feel motivated. Imagine trying to drive a car with no gas in the tank. That’s what many women are doing every day. They’re trying to create momentum from an empty tank. No wonder they feel stuck.

    There can be many reasons, including:

    • chronic stress
    • poor sleep
    • hormone fluctuations
    • decision fatigue
    • burnout
    • lack of movement
    • dehydration
    • blood sugar swings
    • emotional exhaustion
    • information overload

    Sometimes what feels like laziness is actually exhaustion. And exhaustion deserves support, not shame.


    5 Natural Ways to Support Motivation and Energy

    1. Stop Trying to Do Everything

    Many women are carrying enough responsibility for three people.

    One of the quickest ways to feel defeated is trying to tackle everything at once.

    Instead ask:

    “What is the next right thing?”

    Not:

    • next 20 things
    • next 50 things

    Just the next thing.

    Small wins build momentum.


    2. Move Before You Feel Like It

    This sounds backward. But waiting to feel motivated often doesn’t work. Movement creates momentum. I’ve started taking evening walks and it has increased my energy level exponentially. (Thank God!)

    Try:

    • a 10-minute walk
    • stretching
    • dancing to one song
    • a quick workout

    The goal is not perfection. The goal is movement. Action often creates motivation.


    3. Eat for Energy

    Many women accidentally fuel exhaustion.

    Examples:

    • coffee only
    • sugary breakfasts
    • skipping meals
    • grabbing processed snacks

    Instead focus on:

    • protein
    • healthy fats
    • fruits
    • vegetables
    • hydration

    Your body needs fuel.


    4. Reduce Decision Fatigue

    One reason I love systems is because they reduce mental clutter.

    Simple systems may include:

    • meal planning
    • weekly schedules
    • morning routines
    • evening routines
    • checklists

    Every decision you eliminate frees up mental energy. And mental energy matters.


    5. Celebrate Progress

    Many women are accomplishing amazing things but only focus on what’s left undone. Try ending each day by writing:

    Three things I did well today.

    That’s it.

    Momentum grows when we notice progress.

    My counselor has been telling me to say out loud to myself, “I am taking good care of you by eating this,” etc. By stating it out loud, I’ve noticed there is much more intention behind my actions.

    Try it. you might like it.

    Bedtime Procrastinator: Master Level

    I need to make a confession.

    As a child, I was an Olympic-level bedtime procrastinator.

    I had tactics. Strategies. Advanced negotiation skills.

    My personal favorite was spotting a tiny spider or dust bunny in the corner of the ceiling and screaming like the house was on fire.

    Suddenly I had all the attention I could ever want, although it was negative in nature.

    Bedtime Procrastinators at Your House?

    Do you have any of these creative, mischievous littles in your castle? Let me jog your memory:

    • water
    • needs to use the bathroom for the 8th time in 5 minutes…
    • another hug
    • another blanket
    • a stuffed animal they haven’t seen in ten years – slight exaggeration
    • the need to pray for children in Asia
    • a story
    • deep life questions, ALL of these ONLY happen after laying down in bed… anyone else?

    If kids put the same energy into school that they put into avoiding bedtime, we’d have a nation of child geniuses.

    Bedtime Procrastinators: The Motive

    Possible reasons:

    • they don’t want the day to end
    • they want more connection time
    • they’re overtired
    • the routine is unpredictable

    I’ve personally thought it is mostly fear of missing out and separation anxiety. But who am I?

    Bedtime Procrastination Solutions

    When my kids were younger, bedtime sometimes felt like negotiating with tiny caffeinated kittens.

    What helped the most wasn’t being stricter.  It was having a predictable nighttime rhythm.

    And what finally brought the most peace? This may be a wet blanket on your hope, but… the biggest relief was when I decided to lay in the kid’s rooms until they fell asleep. Otherwise, I got more steps in after 8:30pm, then I did all day. (True story). Think massive trips with said items in hand over and over again.

    These things did help:

    bath
    • quiet time
    reading
    • lights out routine

    But what really brought peace is when I’d lay on their floors and read my grown up books silently, or catch up on emails. My presence helped them relax much quicker with so much less chaos. (Sorry, not sorry – it’s the truth).

    Free (my favorite F word), Procrastinator Deciminator…

    After going through years of bedtime chaos, I eventually wrote down the routine that helped our house settle down in the evenings.

    I turned it into a little guide for other tired parents.

    Why Overwhelmed Moms Can’t Lose Weight – (it’s not our fault)

    Why Overwhelmed Moms can’t lose weight. I mean does this sound familiar? It has been my day to day: 24-7, 365.

    “You eat clean.”

    “We try supplements.”

    “You skip meals.”

    “We walk.”

    “Nothing works.”

    “You’re exhausted.”

    “Our child melts down.”

    “You live in fight-or-flight.”

    Why Overwhelmed Moms can’t lose weight: “This isn’t a willpower problem. It’s a nervous system + metabolic safety problem.”

    The cortisol (stress hormone is high), we are not insulin signaling properly. Our blood sugar most commonly is not in range (above 150).

    Why Overwhelmed Moms can’t lose weight: Reframe: Survival Mode Blocks Healing

    Like I was stating above:

    • Chronic stress → cortisol
    • Cortisol → insulin resistance
    • Insulin resistance → fat storage + cravings
    • Nervous system dysregulation → burnout + no results

    “Your body cannot heal or release weight when it thinks you are not safe.”

    Overwhelmed Moms Can lose weight with the right systems:

    Systems > Willpower

    Here are some systems that helped this overwhelmed mom greatly:

    • Sleep system

    Only with proper rest can our bodies relax enough for overwhelmed moms to be able to lose weight. I suggest: set a bed time alarm. No technology for at least two hours before sleep. Rest with a fan on. Make sure the environment is cool enough. The room needs to be dark. Stretch and relax before going into sleep mode. Destress. Make a list for tomorrow and leave any cares on the paper/list where you left it.

    • Regulation system

    We have to be somewhat regulated for our overwhelmed mom bodies to release weight. Self care is so important here. Breath work, proper hygiene, and mind set are important. With implementing these self care techniques the body can become relaxed enough to function optimally. Getting at least twenty minutes of high intensity movement is a regulation booster too. Try it before you knock it.

    • Nutrition rhythm

    Overwhelmed moms often snack for energy. We also eat to destress. Comfort food (high starches), sugars, caffiene, and heavily processed foods are easy grabs for overwhelmed moms. When this is the case, I suggest drinking water before eating, to insure we are actually hungry. Next keep only whole, nutricious foods around as options. Aim for several small meals instead of cramming a ton of food in. Avoid eating after dinner. Making these rhythms provide an extra layer of security. Eating like this helps me feel more in control.

    • Gentle metabolic support

    Think of your body like a little car. To make a car go, you need to give it good fuel and keep the engine healthy. Metabolic support is just a fancy way of saying we are taking care of your “inner engine.” When a mom is very tired or stressed, her engine starts to move slowly, and it’s hard to get where she wants to go. By eating the right foods and getting good rest, we help her engine run fast and smooth again. This gives her the “vroom-vroom” energy she needs to play with her kids and feel strong!

    I have a bit of a “turbo-charged,” system to share with you. This may help assist anyone interested in losing weight. Let me present this fairly new product to you:
